“Think big” is one of the most important mentality that we often heard about when it comes to achieving success in life. Almost every success and motivational guru asks us to think big, but why is that? Why do we need to think big?
A couple of days ago, I decided to pick up an old book and re-read the book. This book is The Magic of Thinking Big, written by David Schwartz.
Since the New Year is just around the corner, I figured that having some new motivation and drive can be a good help in determining my passion, goals, plans, and direction in 2020.
And so, I decided to read this book again. And I’m glad I did.
The book reminds me of how important it is to think big, to think positive, and to think creatively.
If you haven’t read the book yet, I strongly suggest you get the book and read it right away.
It will change the way you think and helps you think big.
So, why do thinking big so important in our lives? Here are the 6 main reasons…
1. Thinking Big Gives You Motivation
Yes, thinking big gives you motivation and drives. If you set goals but you don’t feel motivated toward them, perhaps, it is because your goals are not exciting. And this is because your goals are not big enough.
Think about it, when something is “too normal” or something you can easily reach, it doesn’t drive you.
If you can choose a holiday location, where would you want to visit? If you’re from the US, then perhaps, you will want to visit some other country that you’ve never been to before.
I’m from Malaysia, and if possible, I would like to visit countries outside of Asia. Visiting countries you have never been before excites you.
Think about it, if you are a regular McDonald’s patron, getting the hamburger there again for the third time this week isn’t going to sound exciting to you, isn’t it?
This is why you want to think big. When you think big, you make your goals and dreams exciting. And when something is exciting, you will look forward to achieving it.
It somehow gives you the motivation, the drive, and the energy to work for it.
On the contrary, thinking small and unexciting will not spark your motivation.
When I was just a student studying at university, doing my assignment was a boring task. But when I started to see beyond just my assignment, like starting my own company, leading people, building success, it drives me.
So, do you now know why some people are excited and can’t wait to get up each morning working on their dreams? Think big, my friend.

2. Thinking Big Attracts the Right People and Opportunities
Ask yourself, do you want to work with someone who is uninteresting, or do you want to work with someone who has a big vision and is enthusiastic about his dreams?
The answer is obvious, we all want to work with people who are driven and are passionate about their vision.
Nobody wants to be surrounded by uninteresting people. This is why all the big companies like Tesla, Apple, Facebook, Google, etc., are able to attract top talents.
People love to work with other people who have big dreams.
And that means, when you dream big, you will automatically attract other big dreamers into your life. You will attract big opportunities to you because you are constantly telling the world that you’re a big dreamer and you want to achieve extraordinary success with others.
In the book, The Magic of Thinking Big, the author gave a good example of how thinking big can attract big opportunity.
There was a construction project to build a bridge. The developer approached 17 construction companies, 3 of them were big and reputable firms. And these 3 firms submitted their proposals as expected.
The rest, the other 14 smaller firms, only 1 company submitted their proposal. Those small firms that did not tender for the project thought that the project was too big for them to handle. They think small.
But the one that submitted the proposal thought to themselves, “Hey, this is a good opportunity for us to grow. The project is huge, but we will find out how to manage it later. Let’s jump into this opportunity and do it.”
That’s how thinking big can make a difference. And that’s why you need to think big.
3. Thinking Big Allows You to Grow
Yes, thinking big allows you to grow. The reason is simple, when you think big, you will have to do something different than most ordinary people.
And this means that you will have to venture out of your comfort zone. You can’t achieve great success or live a great life if you continue to do what you do every day.
You have got to make a difference. You have to do something different in order to produce a different result. If you keep doing what you have always done, you will get the same old result as you always did.
Hence, thinking big is the way to help you move into the uncomfortable zone.
And yes, things are going to be uncomfortable because you’re doing something that you have never done before. It can be scary because you are not used to it.
But that’s the only way you can grow yourself. Do you know the reason why ships are built?
Well, a ship is safe in the harbor, but that’s not why it was built for.
If you want to discover a new ocean, you must be willing to give up on the shore. You can’t get to a new place by staying where you are.
Therefore, you have to have the courage to venture out of your comfort zone. And it all starts with thinking big.
4. Thinking Big is the Way to Live to Your Fullest Potential
How do you know how much you can achieve? Perhaps, let me be more specific. How much do you think you can earn in a month? How much do you think you deserve to be paid?
You will never know the answer until you do it. You can’t tell how good you are or how much potential you have in life until you do it, right?
Hence, you must think big because that’s the only way to find out how good you are.
What if you are destined to be successful? To live first-class? To become a great leader? To inspire others? And to impact people’s lives?
But because of your puny thinking, you keep yourself in the rut. You limit your own potential because you think small and you play it small.
Remember, if you want to know how good you are, you need to go out and do it.
You will never know how great you are or how successful you can be until you do.
And thinking big is the doorway to unleashing your full potential. It all starts with your thinking. When you think big, big things will come into your life.
5. Why Think Small When You Can Think Big?
Have you ever asked yourself, why do you want to think small and play small when you can think big and be big?
Most people have the wrong perception to believe that thinking big is bad, thinking big is difficult, or thinking big requires more work, which are false perceptions.
You see, it takes the same energy to think big and to think small. And since you’re going to be thinking anyway, you might as well think big.
Thinking big doesn’t mean that you will have to put in more time or more effort. Thinking big is just a mentality. And in order to achieve big things, you will have to do things differently.
If you look at extraordinary people who have achieved amazing success in life, they are just like you and me, a normal person.
Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, you, and I have 24 hours a day. So, it doesn’t mean that to achieve greater success, you will need to put in more time.
And because there are only 24 hours a day, there is no way we can put in more hours of work to produce more results.
If you are earning $5,000 working 10 hours a day, it doesn’t mean that you are going to make $10,000 when you work 20 hours a day. Do you get it?
It is not about the time you put in, it is not about the effort, and it is not about your education. It is about your thinking. It is your mentality that will shape the way you make decisions and the way you do things.
Hence, think big if you want to produce big results.
6. Think Big Requires Similar Effort As When You Think Small
As I mentioned above, a lot of people have the wrong perception and believe thinking big requires a big effort, which is not.
Here’s a great quote from Tony Robbins that says it all:
“It’s not the lack of resources that cause failure, it’s the lack of resourcefulness that causes failure.”
It doesn’t matter where you are right now, how much money you make, your family background, your education, or who you are, to be successful, you need to be resourceful.
And the way you think will determine how resourceful you are.
When you think big, you will find the right answer to achieve your big goals. Similarly, when you think small, you will come up with a plan to achieve the small goals.
Therefore, think big. Make it your mantra to think big.
Here’s one more thing you need to know:
“We aim above the mark to hit the mark.”
Take a good look at this picture below…
You now know why you want to think big and why it is important to do so. Become a big dreamer and live a big life.
