Have you ever thought about what does it take to achieve success in life? Is it education and the general knowledge you learned in school? Or is it positive thinking where you can look at a dire situation and still find hope? Or is it your ability to take action and execute?
No matter what kind of success you are trying to achieve in life, you need to develop skills that will get you the results you desire.
Yes, education and knowledge are important, but they are not the sole factor for success. And yes, positive thinking is crucial, but being optimistic alone is not enough.
And it is the same for taking action. You may be someone proactive and an action taker, but if your direction is not correct, you will always end up in the wrong destination.
So, what does it take to achieve outstanding success in life? In this guide, I will share the 7 most valuable skills for success everyone needs to master…
1. Decision-making and the skills to make the best decisions most of the time
Your ability to make the right decision is one of the most important skills for success you must master.
Think about it, what does it take to achieve success in life? Making the right choices. Some people choose to watch Netflix than work on their goals. And some people choose to invest than to spend every penny they earned.
As you can see, your choices and decisions will greatly impact your life.
When you make the right decision, regardless of whether it is to change a job, move to a new place, start a new business, get into a relationship, or set a new goal and begin again, these are the things that will affect your future.
Hence, your success in life is greatly dependent on your decisions – what you choose to do with your life and everything that is happening.
When you decide to do the right thing, you will get the right results. On the contrary, when you make a poor decision, it will only get you further away from what you want to achieve in your life.
So, choose wisely. Make the right decision that will get you closer to your goals and dreams, especially big decisions in your life.

2. Adaptability and response-ability to the ever-changing environment and surrounding
Life is constantly moving and changing because time doesn’t stop, and you will never get to live the same day twice.
Therefore, your skill to adapt and respond to changes is the key to your success in life.
Think about it, if you want to achieve success in business and life, you need to learn how to adapt to situations that you may not encounter before.
Starting a business is easy, what is difficult is in managing and growing the business. Anyone can start a business, but not everyone can grow the business to profitability.
And in business, things change and change fast. If you cannot adapt and respond to the current situation, your business will be out of business.
The same is true in life. When you are in your 20’s, things may look good and fresh to you. There are so many things you want to try and achieve.
However, once you reached 50, things will be totally different. By that time, you are looking for security and prefer to live a more stable life than when you are in your 20’s.
This is why your skill to adapt to a situation and respond is important for your success. Just like this quote below:
“It is not the strongest nor the most intelligent of species that survives, but the one that is most adaptable to change.”
– Charles Darwin
Motorola invented the cell phone, but because the company was unable to adapt and make changes fast, it has become obsolete in today’s market.

3. Initiative and drive to take action and make things happen
Success is not going to fall from the sky. Your dreams and goals will not magically manifest themselves until you do something about them.
Many people got the wrong thinking and thought that success happens by accidents. Wrong. Success is not created by accidents, but by proper planning and taking action.
And this is why your skill to be proactive and initiative is important. Someone lazy and who prefers to lay on the couch and watch TV isn’t going to amount to much.
Thus, develop your proactive skills. Someone proactive will go out and make things happen, while someone reactive will wait for things to happen.
So, are you proactive or reactive? Do you wait for things to come to you or do you go out and create things?
Successful people like Elon Musk, Warren Buffett, Steve Jobs, etc., are initiators. They don’t sit there and wait for things to happen. They are the ones who initiate and make the impossible possible.
So don’t just sit there and watch TV or play games, go and make things happen. If there is something you want to achieve, go and get it.
Wishing and hoping success will come to you is not a viable plan. You need to be proactive and be the one who initiates something.

4. Goals and planning for bridging the future and the present
Again, success is not going to fall from the sky or come to you out of nowhere, success will only happen when you plan for it and take action.
Therefore, the next skill for success you must develop is your ability to set goals, focus on a target, and make plans to achieve them.
Here’s a quote that I love a lot:
“Nobody ever wrote down a plan to be broke, fat, lazy, or stupid. Those things are what happen when you don’t have a plan.”
– Larry Winget
That’s right, when you don’t have a plan, you will end up becoming someone else’s plan.
If you think about it, someone who doesn’t have a goal or a plan will end up working for someone who has a goal and a plan.
And this is why you must build the skill to set goals and make plans. Because if you don’t your life will become reactive, and you will follow the crowd wherever the crowd goes. You will end up like a sheep.
But when you have a goal and a plan, you know what you need to do to get there. And that, my friend, is what makes all the difference.
I would like to invite you to join me in Goal Setting Formula to develop your skills to set goals and make plans, where you will discover how to gain an unfair advantage in business and life.
5. Self-awareness from both inner and outer self
Self-awareness is another important skill for success you must build.
People who have a higher sense of self-awareness tend to be more focused, present, and able to accomplish more.
According to this article on Forbes, self-awareness is, in any given moment, as you’re talking with someone, or speaking up in a meeting, running your business, engaged in parenting, or thinking about a key goal or activity, you can stop in that very moment and step back, separate yourself from this process, and take stock of how you’re approaching yourself, others, the world, and your challenges.
And that means you are aware of your inner self (how you think, feel, react, etc.) and what is happening in your world (outer self).
Someone who is self-aware can see himself from the outside in and then inside out.
You can tell if you are off-track or on-track. You will know if you are working away from your core values and from what you know to be true about yourself and how you want to show up in the world.
And that’s the power of self-awareness. It helps you understand what is going on inside and outside of yourself.
When you are aware, you can then make better adjustments to fit the current situation and make the best decisions to achieve the success you desire in life.

6. Optimism and your ability to find the positive in what’s happening
That’s right, positive thinking is important. You may not be successful by just thinking positively alone, but it allows you to do better and get out of a tough situation faster than most people.
In my article, The #1 Benefit Of Positive Thinking According To Research, I shared how negative thinking and emotions will shut off your brain.
When you are happy, everything seems possible to you, and you will have the ‘can-do’ attitude. But when you fall into the trap of negative thinking, all you see are problems and roadblocks.
Being optimistic will make you a better person. You will greet your neighbors when you are happy. Will you say hello to your neighbors when you are pissed off?
The same thing happens in every area of your life. And this is how optimism and positive thinking affect your success.

7. Self-mastery and personal development
The last skills for success I want to share here are none other than self-mastery and personal development.
People who are looking to improve themselves constantly will outperform people who don’t.
I always love to use the example of playing a game. Think about your character in the game is at level 3. When you face an enemy at level 7, it will be a tough battle.
But once if you improved and leveled up your character to level 15, the same level 7 enemy will not be a threat to you anymore.
It is not about how big the problems are in your life. It is about growing and improving yourself. It is your size that matters!
If you are earning $5,000 a month right now and you want to earn $50,000, you need to upgrade your skills and improve your ability to earn.
Thus, it is not about how much you can earn or how much success you can create, when you level up yourself, you will attract the results to you.
This is why I always suggest my readers, including you, commit to self-mastery. Read personal development books, improve your knowledge in your niche, become better, and attend classes and seminars when possible.
Here’s a great event from John Assaraf (New York Times best-selling author) you should join.
