There is no way you can be successful if you stay where you are and do what you do. Nothing changes until you change yourself. And if you want to achieve real success in life, you need to invest in yourself.
Investing in yourself is one of the most powerful ways you can get on the return on your investment. It is powerful because it allows you to learn the necessary skills to achieve the goals you want and at the same time, equip you with the right knowledge to better execute and make progress.
Zig Ziglar has a life-changing quote about learning:
“If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you.”
Zig Ziglar
Now, when it comes to investing in yourself, most people think about reading books, learning, and attending seminars. That’s just one part of the learning process.
If you truly want to improve yourself and grow yourself to the next level, you need to invest in yourself in a more thorough way.
So, how do you do that? Here are 10 great ways how to do so…
1. Read, attend classes and seminars
This is by far, the most common method that people will practice to improve themselves. Reading books is easy. You just need to pick up the right books and then commit yourself to read it. Of course, don’t just read the book, learn the knowledge, and then apply what you have learned to your life.

Besides reading, you can also attend seminars, classes, or workshops to further improve your knowledge and skills on a certain subject.
As someone who commits to never-ending improvement, I try to attend at least 2 seminars a year. Last year, I attended a workshop about real estate investing and also Millionaire Mind Intensive by Harv Eker.
I suggest you read the book from Harv Eker, Secrets of the Millionaire Mind before you attend any of his seminars. This will fully equip you with the fundamentals and so you can absorb even more in his seminars.
Try to make it your habit to read and learn. It is easy to do, but most people still prefer to watch Netflix and waste time on social media. And so, if you are willing to commit to reading just one book every month, it gives you a competitive edge and puts you ahead of others.
2. Take care of your health
Yes, investing in yourself should include taking care of your health and overall wellbeing. There is no way you can be successful if your health is in bad shape. You don’t want to become the richest man in the graveyard, right?
You want to be successful and at the same time, have the health and energy to enjoy the fruits of your hard work.
Unfortunately, most people don’t take care of their health. They drink, smoke, and party like there is no tomorrow. And some burn the midnight oil to create the success they want. There will be a price to pay.
You have to understand that there is always an opportunity cost. When you give up your sleep to work on your website, it means that you are giving up your health for wealth.
While I’m not suggesting you to NOT work hard, instead, I’m suggesting you work on both. For instance, you have to find a way to build your business where at the same time, you can maintain your health.
Don’t ignore your health. Make time to exercise and workout. Try to get enough sleep whenever possible. Studies have discovered that lack of sleep decreases your productivity.
Hence, if you want to be productive and achieve greater results in what you do, you need to take of your health. When you do, you will have the energy, the willpower, and the motivation to perform at your peak state.
3. Learn to set goals
This is one of my favorites. You have to have goals if you want to achieve extraordinary results in life. There is no way you can achieve outstanding success without knowing what you really want out of your life, your work, or your career.
You need to have an absolute sense of clarity. And you can do that by setting goals. Of course, goal setting is a huge topic in itself, but if you want to learn more about how to set goals and crush them, I recommend you take my course, Goal Setting Formula Masterclass.
When you have a goal, it will guide you and show you where to go. Rather than working on everything, you know where you’re heading, and it allows you to become proactive.
People without goals are living life like a lost sheep. They are going wherever the crowd goes. And they become reactive by responding to things that come to them.
Invest in yourself. Learn to set goals and find out what you want to accomplish in your life.
Here’s a great saying from Larry Winget:
“Nobody ever wrote down a plan to be broke, fat, lazy, or stupid. Those things are what happen when you don’t have a plan.”
Larry Winget
4. Plan your day, week, month, year, and life
Another essential skill you need to learn to succeed is planning. You can’t let things happen as it is. You need to plan for things to happen.
Do you know that success doesn’t happen through accidents? Success is a result of planning and working in the right direction. Meaning, without a plan, you will never get to where you want to go.
Imagine yourself driving in a foreign country without having a GPS or a map. How can you get to where you want to go? You can’t. Unless you get a map or ask someone the direction, you’re going to get lost in the city until you figure things out.
The map or GPS is like planning. When you have a map, you know where you want to go. You can then make your travel plan and get there.
Sadly, most people spend more time planning their weekend getaway more than they spend time planning their lives.
You have to acquire the skill of planning. When I know what I need to do throughout the day, like having a to-do list, my productivity doubled. When I have no idea what I need to do during the day, I waste most of my time on social media and surfing YouTube.
Plan, my friend. Remember, wars are won in the general’s tent.

5. Invest to build better relationships
I bet you don’t want to succeed and have no one to share your victories. Thus, invest in yourself by building better relationships with people you care about and people who can take you higher.
First, we all know that it is important to have an intimate relationship with the people we loved. What you need to do then is to spend time and make effort to this group of people.
Next, you have to also consider your relationship with people in your career and profession. You want to make sure you are joining the right crowd because if you want to fly, you should stop swimming with the ducks. Instead, join the eagles.
The people you spend the most time with can greatly impact your thinking and hence, your life. So, you want to make sure you spend time with the right people.
Here are 2 articles to help you build better relationships in life:
6. Learn a new skill
When was the last time you learn a new skill? Learning something new is important because it challenges you and forces you to move out of your comfort zone.
Well, you don’t have to learn a new language or how to play the piano if you don’t want to. In today’s world, there are a ton of new skills you can learn from the comfort of your home.
For instance, you can learn how to code, how to design using Photoshop, video editing, photo shooting, build a website, marketing like Facebook ads management, social media management, how to blog, how to cook, how to do cards magic, how to make a signature dish, how to meditate, and much, much more.
In fact, the list is endless. All you need to do is to pick a few new skills that interest you, and then commit and spend time investing yourself learning them.

7. Invest in a side project or a business
Yes, starting a side hustle or a business is one of the best ways you can invest in yourself. Why? Well, there are just way too many lessons and experiences you can gain from starting your own business.
You get to learn people management, marketing, creative thinking, time management, etc. Plus, you will also improve and grow yourself when you push yourself to do something that is out of your comfort zone.
You get to learn how to handle rejection, how to deal with mistakes, how to work more effectively, how to take calculated risks, and many more.
If you think that starting a side business or project is going to take too much of your time, you’re wrong. In today’s world, anyone can start a side hustle from the internet. Read this book, The 10% Entrepreneur, and the author, Patrick McGinnis will show you how to live your startup dream without quitting your day job.
8. Invest in your financial future
You can’t consider yourself successful if you are not financially successful, right? Thus, invest in your financial future. Most people are already on this journey of accumulating wealth.
But if you are not doing anything to build and grow your wealth, start right now. The earlier you start the better. This is because time is on your side and the compound effect will work on its magic.
Again, you don’t have to start with a huge amount of money, you just need to get it started. I love the story shared by Harv Eker. He said that many people thought that they need to have a lot of money to invest, but this is far from the truth.
Imagine you bought a single-scoop ice-cream for your 3-year-old daughter. She’s happy to enjoy the ice-cream. But because her hands were small, she didn’t know how to grab the cone properly. So, the single scoop ice-cream fell on the floor.
She cried and demanded another one. As a good father, you decided to get her another ice-cream. But this time, she saw a triple-scoop and she wanted that.
Let me ask you, will you buy the triple scoop ice-cream for her? The answer is no, why? Because she can’t handle even a single scoop, right?
That’s exactly what is happening to most people out there when it comes to achieving financial success. They can’t even handle $100, but they want to invest only when they have $10,000.
For your wealth to grow, you need to grow it from the beginning. You have to learn financial skills so that you can handle bigger money. Do you get that?
So, how do you invest in your financial future? I’m not a financial expert, all I can do is suggest you read Secrets of the Millionaire Mind. Follow the jar system recommended by Harv Eker, and you will never go wrong.
9. Invest in your emotional wellbeing
Besides, reading, learning, and investing in your mind, you have to also invest and your emotional wellbeing.
For instance, more and more people are feeling stressed these days. This is because they don’t know how to spend time and invest in their emotional wellbeing.
You don’t want to live a life where all you do is work, work, and more work. You want to have breaks and leisure too.
Taking short breaks are important. As a blogger and internet marketer, I have to face the screen for long hours. And whenever if I don’t take breaks, I find my productivity drops because it makes me difficult to focus.
The same goes for your life. You have to take a break and recharge your soul. Get close to nature. Go for a short getaway. Travel to other countries. Practice yoga and do meditation. And disconnect yourself occasionally so you can understand your emotional needs better.

10. Invest in mentors and coaches
Finally, you want to invest in mentors and coaches. These are the people who have been there and have succeeded in what you want to achieve. Therefore, they know the way and they can take you there.
It will save you a lot of time and without having to make similar mistakes your mentors have made.
Just like submitting Mount Everest. There is no way you will want to figure out how to do that by yourself. You need to get someone who has the experience and has done it before to show you the way.
This is why getting a mentor or a coach is important. In sports, every professional athlete has at least one coach. Champions like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant, and Michael Phelps know that if they want to improve, they’re going to need guidance from someone else.
If you want to get yourself a mentor, check out this article from Jeff Goins.
Conclusion
Investing in yourself is important if you want to achieve extraordinary success in what you do. The more you invest in yourself, the more you are going to get it out from yourself.
If you want to get to higher ground, you must be willing to let go of where you are. In other words, you must be willing to grow in order to produce outstanding results. And it started with you.
So, use the 10 tips above, invest in yourself, and see yourself excel, perform better, and start living the dream life you have always desire.
Inspiring post, Shawn. Success to me truly is not just measured by the dollars we make, but by overcoming obstacles and the impact we are able to make in other people’s life.
Hello Jay, yea, it is not always about the money. If you’re inspired by money, you’ll lose the drive when you made some.. 🙂
