10 Simple Ways How to Motivate People When They Are Down

No matter who you are, there will be times when you feel totally down and have no motivation to do things. And this doesn’t just happen to you, it can happen to anyone around you – your team, your family, your friends, your children, your colleagues, etc. In this article, you will learn how to motivate people and inspire them to achieve their goals and pursue their dreams.

If you want to become successful in life, you need to step up and become a leader. You must play the role of a confident leader so that you can inspire and win people’s cooperation.

This is especially true if you have a team or a group of people who are working for you. But even if you don’t have any employees with you, there will be times when people who are closed to you may need your help.

Your friends, your spouse, your children, your relatives, and your colleagues, there will be times when they feel no motivation or feel lost in life.

And if you can show them and help them find their spark back, you will have done a great deed.

In fact, when you motivate others, you are actually motivating yourself too. When you tell people to pursue their dreams, you are indirectly telling yourself the same message.

This is why I like to inspire people. And this is also why I started this blog. I want to motivate people to achieve their goals and inspire them to live their dreams.

So, what can you do when the people around you are down? Here are 10 ways how you can motivate people and help get them out of the rut…

1. Praise Their Efforts Sincerely

One of the easiest ways how you can motivate people is to praise and compliment their efforts, sincerely of course.

Now, you have to understand that we all love to receive praise and compliments. Nobody likes to receive complaints and get the blame.

What is more important to take note here is that you want to praise people’s effort, not just results.

Imagine if your friend has work day and night to build an e-commerce business, but in the end, he failed. So, what you can do is to praise for his effort. You want him to know that he has worked hard to make it happen. It is the effort that counts.

Remember, you don’t want to be fake here. Just praise and compliment sincerely. Say good words for people’s effort, and they will feel the inspiration.

2. Find Out What Motivates Them

Another way how you can motivate people is to find out what drives them. Like you, you are motivated toward your goals and there is a reason behind, right?

Hence, find out that purpose. Find out what makes people do what they do. Why do they want to start the business or why do they want to join you as a team?

When you know their purpose, you can then remind them of their purpose. I used to be in real estate sales. A lot of people joined the real estate industry because it is lucrative. They can make a lot of money if they manage to close some big deals.

But why do they want to make the money in the first place? Is it because they want to buy a bigger and more luxurious car to impress their friends and family? Is it because they want to feel proud?

When you know these reasons, remind the ones who you want to motivate. Tell them about their dreams, talk to them about their purpose, and remind them their why.

3. Start with Smaller and Achievable Goals

Most of the time, people lack motivation because they fail to produce the results. Think about it, why do people give up on their goals like losing weight or building a business? Well, because they fail to lose the extra fat or they fail to make the business profitable.

However, if they are able to produce results upfront, they won’t feel dejected. They will be driven, because what they did do work.

Therefore, if you want to inspire people to take action, tell them to start with smaller and more achievable goals.

When you set a goal that is too far away from your present moment, many things can happen. Plus, when a goal is unrealistic, it becomes impossible to achieve. And guess what will happen to you if you know your goal is impossible to achieve?

Well, you will sabotage your own effort. You won’t feel the motivation because you know that you can’t achieve it no matter how hard you try, so why even try, right?

This is why you want to focus on smaller and more achievable goals. In my Goal Setting Formula masterclass, I show you exactly how you can turn your goals into actionable steps. Learn more about Goal Setting Formula here.

Thus, get your employees or your team to come up with weekly goals and define their daily action steps.

Get them to focus on what will create them the results they want. And when they see the results, they will feel motivated.

4. Help Them with The Resources They Need

Yes, one of the simplest ways to motivate people is to help them with the resources they need.

There will be times when people feel stuck and have problems that they don’t know how to solve. It will be good if you can provide them the help and resources they needed to solve their problems.

For instance, I’m not a technical person. And there are many times I feel de-motivated because I wanted to alter some things on my website, but I just don’t know how to do it.

The great thing is that I know where to look for a solution. Sometimes, I will post my questions on forums, other times, I will check with my hosting team and ask them for solutions. And many times, I will simply search for solutions on Google and learn to solve them myself.

I can’t tell you how much this has helped me and inspired me into taking action again. Once my problems solved, I feel lighter and ready to take on the world again.

Therefore, help the people you want to motivate with solutions and resources.

5. Give Them the Right Incentives

If you are trying to motivate your team to work on a common goal, then perhaps, the use of the right incentive may be helpful.

In other words, you want to use rewards to drive people into taking action. This is an easy-to-understand method, but it must be conducted in the right way with the right reward, else it will lose its effectiveness.

When the right incentives are involved, people will become more motivated to perform.

6. Show Them the Possibilities

Do you know what we like the most? Dreams. We love to imagine all the great possibilities in life, and every time when we think about achieving greatness, living the perfect life, and having to accomplish our goals, we feel motivated.

This is why it is effective to sell dreams. You want to give people a positive outlook of their future so that they will become hopeful again.

Most people lose their motivation because they fail to connect their present moment with what they want to achieve in the future. And if you can connect them with their dreams and hope again, they will become motivated once more.

This is why visualization is such a powerful tool. When you imagine what the future you desire, like running a successful business, being proud because you are finally financially free, you can travel around the world in first-class, you’re driving a luxury car to work, etc., will get you pumped.

Thus, if you want to motivate people, show them the possibilities. Get them to dream again. Let them imagine the success they want and let them feel hope.

7. Radiate Positivity

Nobody likes bad news. We all love to hear and receive good news. Imagine you’re having a meeting with your team, suddenly another member come into the room and tell you something bad, how would you feel?

We don’t like negative emotions, we want love to be around with people who are happy and positive.

So, don’t litter negativity, instead, radiate positive energy. Become a positive person, and the people around you will automatically be lifted with positive energy.

If you want to motivate people, you must be a positive person. You can’t inspire someone if you don’t have the energy to inspire. Hence, always broadcast positivity. Bring good and positive news to people.

8. Be a Good Listener

Yes, the first thing you need to do to motivate people is to become a good listener. Don’t act like you’ve already known it all and you know what the person needs to do.

First, gain the trust and respect of people before you can motivate them to do something.

Imagine meeting someone who tries to sell you something by giving a lengthy speech, how will you react? Will you end up buying whatever he is selling?

You know the answer. If you want to motivate people, start by listening to them. Find out their goals, their dreams, and why are they not feeling motivated. When you know the cause, you can provide a better and more effective solution.

9. Encourage People to Dream Big

Big visions are inspirational. This is why most people prefer to work in big companies like Google, Tesla, Apple, etc. because the companies have big visions.

And one great method to motivate people is to encourage them to dream big. The bigger the dream, the more excited it will be.

Think about it, do you think that it is more exciting to visit the shopping mall nearby your house, or is it more exciting to visit the shopping district in a country that you’ve never been to before?

Many people don’t dare to dream big because they are afraid of what follows. They worry about what if they fail and they doubt their own abilities.

And this is where you come in. You can inspire people by encouraging them to dream big.

10. Be a Good Example

Finally, be a good example. You can’t motivate people if you don’t feel motivated yourself. If you want to be a good leader, you must set yourself a good example.

Don’t go around littering negativity, stop playing the blame game, and don’t complain. Instead, act like a confident leader who is positive and always helpful.

This is especially true if you have a team. You can’t inspire people if you don’t set as a good example. People follow those who are positive and with good characteristics.

Think about all the great leaders in the world. People like Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Richard Branson, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Albert Einstein, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Winston Churchill, and more.

These extraordinary people are great leaders and their words are inspirational. People want to follow them because they are visionary, and they set themselves as a great example to follow.
