Goals and Planning

3 Essential Rules You Must Follow If You Want to Achieve Your Goals

Goal setting is one of the main topics on this blog. And I love to talk about setting and achieving goals, a lot.

So, if you don’t know how to set goals, or if you have set them but fail to achieve them, no worry, I’ll point you in the right direction.

If you want to learn everything, I suggest you go through my course, Goal Setting Formula.

So, why do some people reach their goals while most fail to accomplish them?

In my opinion, there are 3 rules that every successful person adheres to. And if you stick to these rules, you too will have no problem turning your goals into reality.

Here are the 3 essential rules you must follow to achieve your goals…

1. Make your goals specific and actionable

First thing first, you must be specific with what you want, and you must come up with an actionable plan.

One of the main reasons people are paralyzed and they fail to execute their goals is that what they want is unspecific.

Remember, when you set goals, you are telling your mind what you want to achieve.

Therefore, if you are being vague, you will confuse your mind and you will never know what action steps to take.

Not only that, vague goals can never motivate you.

Think about it, which of these 2 goals below excite you more:

  • To make more money, or
  • To make an additional $5,000 per month from your sales so that you will be qualified to visit Bali by year-end.

I think the answer is obvious.

The more specific your goals, the more motivated you will be.

Besides, specific goals help you formulate a better action plan.

Most people just set goals, they don’t have an action plan. They have no idea what are the exact steps they need to take to achieve their goals.

And thus, they do nothing. They just sit and wait for things to come to them.

Don’t let this happen to you.

Make your goals specific and create an actionable plan.

2. Write down your goals and share them

Let’s be honest, do you write down your goals?

According to studies conducted by Dr. Gail Matthews, people who write down their goals are 42% more likely to achieve them.

The problem with most people is that they don’t write down their goals.

Well, we all know that having goals are important in lives because they act as a lighthouse and show us the direction of where we want to go.

But sadly, most people treat it like it is something unnecessary.

Most people prefer to “keep” their goals in their head. They don’t write them down. They just “think” about them.

And this is exactly why they fail to achieve the results that they want.

Think about it, if you don’t even bother about writing down your goals, what does that say about your desire to achieve them?

The answer is obvious.

If you are committed, you will write them down. Although it may seem like a ridiculous idea, writing down something actually helps you remember them better.

Apart from them, writing down your goals shows your commitment and how important they are to you in life.

This is why most people who write down their goals tend to be more likely to hit their goals and succeed.

It really doesn’t matter how you write them or where you write them.

The point is to put your goals onto paper. And if possible, review your goals on a daily basis.

The more you revisit your goals, the more you condition them to your mind. And the more you think about them, the more likely you are going to work on them.

As simple as that. Hence, write down your goals and share them.

3. Connect your purpose with your goals

And the third rule you must follow if you want to achieve your goals is to connect them with your purpose.

The number one reason people don’t take action on their goals is they lack desire.

And the factor that causes the lack of desire is the lack of a strong purpose.

There are a ton of weight loss books on the market. And we all know how to lose weight. We just need to exercise more and keep a healthy diet.

We all know what to do, but we just don’t do them.

Why? Maybe because we don’t really want to lose weight in the first place?

If you have a strong desire to lose weight, you will be committed to it, and you will do whatever it takes to burn the additional fat on your body.

The same goes for all your goals.

If your goal is to build a successful blog, what is stopping you from achieving it? Why are you not putting in the effort to write and publish content? Why do you procrastinate?

The answer is clear, it is because most people are okay even if they don’t achieve their goals.

You see, we all want to be financially free. Nobody wants to worry about having no money to pay the bills or to put food on the table, but even if we fail to achieve our financial goal, we will be okay.

When your level of acceptance is low, or when you are comfortable with what you have now, you will be more likely to procrastinate and do what is comfortable.

This, my friend, is why most people procrastinate and don’t act on their goals.

The solution is simple, connect your purpose with your goals. Make your reasons for achieving your goals strong and emotional.

The stronger your “why”, the more committed you will be.

Conclusion

And these are the 3 essential rules everyone must follow if they want to achieve their goals and succeed in everything that they do.

You can’t hit a target you can’t see. This is why you need to be specific with your goals.

You will forget about what you want if it is out of your sight. This is why writing down your goals is important. It keeps your goals in your head, all the time.

You can’t achieve something if you are not committed to it. So, don’t just think about what you want, know your “why” too.
