I get it, hard work is difficult. Nobody wants to work hard if they were given a choice. But hard work is important for success.

I know, I have said it before that “direction is more important than speed”, which is correct, but still, without putting in the work, even if you are in the right direction, nothing’s going to move.

Some people argue as to which is more important: hard work VS smart work.

Here’s the answer: both!

You need both – the right strategy + hard work – to create the results you want.

Without any one of them, success is NOT going to happen. Yes, you are going to need a proven plan, a strategy, and the right direction to get there.

But at the same time, you need to work on the plan. You need to put in action to get the results. You need hard work to execute and make progress.

Therefore, hard work is the prerequisite for success.

If you are not willing to work hard, perhaps, you will never be successful. It’s hard to swallow, but a truth you must accept.

2. Hard Work Prepares You for the Opportunity

Yes, hard work gets you ready for the future you desire. Success isn’t going to fall from the sky. You won’t become a millionaire if all you do is sit there and pray for money to fall on your lap.

Success does not happen by accident. Success is created by design.

The harder you work on something, the more likely you are going to get the opportunity and succeed with it.

When the young Les Brown has a dream to become a DJ, his teacher told him:

“It is better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one than to have an opportunity and not be prepared.”

So, every day, young Les trained himself as a DJ in his room, turning it into a studio. Eventually, he got a chance to work in a local studio and became a DJ.

This is true. I used to work in a real estate firm, selling properties. And I can tell you that luck is a numbers game. And that means, the harder you work, the more clients you meet, the more likely you are going to get the deal.

Imagine if you are a door-to-door salesman. Even if you have no selling skills and you don’t know how to present your offer, you can still make a sale or two, if you approach more people.

Yes, when you can increase your closing rate if you have the skill, but still, you still need to approach clients to close the deal.

And the more clients/customers you meet, the more likely you are going to get the sale. The more you do, the better you become.

It is true in business too. Most people fail their first few business ventures. But the more they do it, the more experience they gain, the luckier they become, and that’s when they successfully build the business.

Do you think Apple started with huge success right from the start? No, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, and a couple of other friends started in Jobs’ garage.
