The first and the most important step that you need to take in order to change your life for the better is to DECIDE for it.
And too many people are not taking seriously. They decide to achieve a certain goal, but they give up somewhere down the road.
They decide to dine in the Japanese restaurant, but when they see there is a huge crowd and a long queue, they change their plan.
Of course you can change plan base on the current situation. However, if you do that too often, it might become your habit and will affect the other areas of your life.
When you set goal and decided to achieve something, you hit a road block, do you change your plan and throw in the towel?
If you constantly change your goals and your plans, it will be extremely difficult to achieve outstanding success in life.
We all know that success requires consistent hard work. And when we constantly change the effort or switch plan, it will never going to work out for us.
In Latin, the word ‘decision’ comes from the word ‘decidere’, which means to ‘cut off’ from something.
In other words, once you have decided, it means you have cut off from all other options. When you decided to eat in that restaurant, it simply means that there will be no option, you have locked it down and will dine in that restaurant, no question asks.
It may sound too extreme at times. However, if you take it too lightly, it is not going to do too well for you as well.
Check with yourself. See if you are a person who constantly changes your decisions.
Perhaps it is time for you to practice the art of staying with what you have decided and never change your decision again.
When you are serious and commit to your decision, achieving your goal will be a matter of time.
Here are the 7 decisions you must make to create a more successful life…
1. The Decision for CHANGE
In order to live a more successful life, you must first decide to change. Are you willing to change? I know that you have been staying in where you are right now for some time and you feel comfortable about it.
Change may be difficult in the beginning. It may be tough, but once you got through it, the result will be beautiful. Just like a butterfly going through metamorphosis.
For your life to change, you must first decide to change. You must want change. Most people don’t want change. That is why they don’t change.
This is constantly changing world. The technology that was used 20 years ago has become obsolete now. If you don’t change for the better, you will eventually become obsolete as well.
There are 2 forces that will motivate you to change:
Pain – You may be in financial crisis, don’t have enough money, in debt or in a broken relationship and these will drive you to change. This is force where it will push you out of your pain.
Pleasure – Perhaps you’re doing well, but you want something better. A better car, a bigger house, a better pay check, etc. This is the force that will pull you towards the things that you want.
So take note on your goals. Do you set goals to get out of your pain or to gain pleasure?
The most effective way to change is to use both of these forces to support you.
For example, if you are overweight and you wanted to get slim, you can visualize yourself being ridicule (pain) by others and make them admire (pleasure) you after you lost the weight and become slim.
When you write down your purpose or reason why you want to accomplish your goals, use these forces to boost your motivation.
So are you ready for change?
Once you have decided to change for the better, here is the second decision you need to make…
2. The Decision for CONNECTION
Nothing great was ever achieved without the love and connection with others.
You have to understand that living a successful life is not all about business and money. Love and connection are another area of your life that you cannot ignore.
In Chinese, there is a saying that you should build a family first before you can build a successful career.
Family always come first. Why?
One of the reasons being that when you have a family, you will feelmore responsible. You will be driven to take care of your family. You will do better because you want to provide something better for the people you love.
This is why love and connection are important in your life. It is not all about being rich and success in business. You need love and be loved to feel complete.
Another important area about connection is your network. It is said that in business, what you know doesn’t really count, the one factor that truly matters is who you know.
Your connection and network are extremely important because they will decide whether you will be successful in what you do.
Look at Steve Jobs, he got to know Steve Wozniak when he first started Apple Computers. What about Walt Disney? Walt Disney has his brother, Roy Disney to help him out.
All the successful athletes have coaches to guide them. In business, successful leaders have mentors to guide them as well.
What about you? Do you have someone to guide you and to coach you? Do you have a strong network and connection with people who will always support and help you in what you do?
Remember, your network and connection with other people will either make you or break you.
There is no way you can be successful without the help and support from others. There’s no such thing a self-made millionaires. To me, even self-made millionaires need the help from others to make his business successful.
Therefore, decide today that you will grow your network and build a better connection with people around you, especially people you love and people who love you.
Smile more, laugh more and spend more quality with your family.
3. The Decision to be HEALTHY
Do you want to be healthy or do you want to be rich? One of the most commonly asks questions from the masses.
Perhaps, both wealth and health are important, right? You can be rich and healthy both in the same time.
You just need to DECIDE for it. Work hard to create the wealth you want and spend time taking care of yourself, easy.
It may be true that you may spend a lot of time working and ignore your health, but please don’t ever neglect your health from TODAY on.
Decide that you will spend more time exercising and consuming healthier foods from now on.
Do you know that when you are healthy you will have more energy to pursue what you want? Not only that, you will be more productive and get more things done too.
Robin Sharma, the author of The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari suggested we work out twice a day. Once in the morning and once in the late afternoon or early evening.
When you exercise, you stretch your muscle and your blood flows better. You will feel more alert and more energetic after that.
It makes you feel good and able to tackle more of your work.
Apart from exercising, you should also look into the food that you take into your body. Eat less junk food, drink less alcohol and don’t smoke. Take supplements like vitamins whenever possible.
When you are healthy and in good condition, you can take on whatever things that comes to you. You will be more productive and able to achieve your goals better.
Thus, decide to be healthy today.
4. The Decision for ACTION
Success requires work. If you are not doing anything that will move you toward your goals and your dreams, there is no way you will achieve the success you want.
Arnold Schwarzenegger said it in one of his speeches, “work your butt off”. Whenever you are partying and playing around, there are other people out there who are working hard to achieve success.
I’m not saying that you need to work 24 hours. It is about your priority. If success is your number one priority in life, you will do whatever it takes and work on it even if it is midnight.
If your highest priority is to have fun, then probably you won’t work in the weekends and you will spend most nights having fun.
There is no right or wrong here. It is just about what you want in your life. And always remember that success requires work.
Action is the bridge connecting you and your dreams. Decide that you will work hard and take action to connect you and your dreams.
So does that means that success is all about work and no fun?
It depends on how you want to look at it. Most successful people are having fun all the time because they are so passionate with what they do that they make their work their play.
This quote below sums it well:
“Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won’t, so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people can’t.”
Hence, work hard for your dreams. Once you are successful, you can get to enjoy. Or better yet, make your work your passion and you will never work for another day.
Decide that you will take action every day to achieve your goals and make your dreams come true.
Be consistent and work on at least 3 or 5 things that will move you toward your goals. I call it the Big 5 or the Big 3.
You decide. Whether to apply the Big 5 or the Big 3.
Most importantly, DECIDE to take action, be in action and keep moving forward every day.
5. The Decision to LEARN and IMPROVE
Do you know that learning can shortcut your road to success? It is said that people are successful because they learn from their failure.
Like Thomas Edison, he tried more than 10,000 attempts before he finally invented the light bulb. To this great inventor, he did not failed 10,000 times, he just found out 10,000 ways that will not work.
Study you life right now. Look at your past and assess your current life. You are where you are right now because of what you did in the past.
This is why you need to learn from your past. If you succeed in doing something, do more of it and improve the way you do it.
If you failed before, take it as a lesson and learn from it. It will become your experience and make you wiser in the future. You will get to make better decision and produce better result.
Decide to learn from other successful people.
Read books, get a coach, get a mentor and ask around for help. Learning avoids you from falling into the failures that other have made.
Your coach and your mentor will guide you better because they know what to avoid and the right way to achieve greater results.
When you read, you understand what others have done and what you should avoid doing. You literally shortcut yourself to success.
Decide to improve your strategies.
You have to always improve and innovate your strategies. When you succeed in achieving your goals, improve your strategies. When you failed, it makes it compulsory to improve your way.
You can’t stop things from changing. What works for you now may not be working for you 5 years from now. This is why most businesses never make it through the 5 years mark.
However, you are different. You know what you need to do now. You can decide to always learn and improve yourself for long-term success.
6. The Decision to PERSIST and to LET GO
Have you ever have a time where you felt like you were standing on the cross road and not sure which path to take?
I believe that everyone has gone through this moment before. If you have yet to encounter this situation, don’t worry, you will eventually reach a point in your life where you have to make decision, whether to persist on or to let go.
How do you know when to persist and when to let go? Sometimes it is difficult to tell.
You have to understand your future and what you truly want. If what you do right now will give you the future that you want, you should persist.
When you know it crystal clear that you want to be a teacher and it is your goal and your dream, then persist until you achieve it.
If what you do now does not relate to what you want in the future, probably you should let go.
You should never give up on your dreams and your goals. They are the benchmarks that will determine what you do right now justify what you want in the future.
I got a friend who works in the sales line, he’s not doing well there and it is not part of his dream work either.
So there’s no point for him to continue to stay there, working at things that he don’t like and doing things that are not part of his future.
On the other hand, if you are clear with your future and you know what you want, by all means, go all out and don’t give up.
Persist until you succeed.
Every Action Counts
A lot of people give up half way when they see no result after pouring their hard work. Let me share with you something…
When you use a hammer and hit at the wall in your house, what would happen? Nothing, except for the loud bang.
What would happen if you continue to hit the wall with your hammer? The first time you hit it, nothing happen. The second time you hit it, nothing happen as well.
And if you continue to hit it, at the 50th time, probably the wall will crack. And if you still persist on and continue to hit it, at the 100th time, maybe you will get a hold on your wall.
The real question is this, do you think that your first to 99th hit contribute to make a hold on the wall? Absolutely!
Can you skip the first 99 hits and hit the 100th time? No you can’t. It is inevitable!
The sad truth is that most people never see the small result contributed from the first to the 99th time that causes the wall to crack and eventually break into a hole.
I strongly suggest you to read this: How Do You Define Success and the Real Meaning Behind.
7. The Decision to APPRECIATE
Do you appreciate what you have right now in your life? Make it your decision appreciates everything that you have right now.
It could be anything, your car, your cat, your dog, your laptop, your phone, your boss, your colleagues, your country, your family, your spouse, etc.
In fact, as long as you are able to wake up each morning and breathe normally, you should appreciate and make full use of your life.
One of the most powerful acts you can do to be more appreciative is by writing a gratitude list every day.
This guy, Chris Winfield, has written more than 1,000 gratitude list and claimed that this activity has profoundly changed his life.
It will be a little difficult when you first practice to write down your gratitude list each day. And it may be a little tough to come up with all the things you want to be grateful for.
However, the more you do it, the easier it will be. The reason being that you will start to pay attention to things that you are grateful for.
Guess what would happen after that? Let Chris shares with you his experience. Read his blog post, 13 Things I’ve Learned Writing 1,024 Gratitude Lists. It’s an interesting read.
The Secret to Wealth
Anthony Robbins, the success coach, once asked Sir John Templeton, the billionaire who turned $10,000 into billions, a question regarding wealth.
Tony asked Sir Templeton what is the secret to wealth.
And to Tony’s surprised, Sir Templeton said, “You know it, you teach it, it is gratitude.”
So you see, if you have a billion in the bank but you are living a pissed off life, frustrated and don’t appreciate what you have, you are broke.
On the other hand, if you have no money at all but you are living a happy life, having fun and appreciate for all the things that been blessed to you, you are the richest man in the world.
Please take not that this does not mean that you can’t have both the money and gratitude.
When you feel grateful, you are wealthy.
Thus, be grateful for everything you have from now on.
The Conclusion
You will be making decisions every day and every moment in your life. These 7 decisions are the most impactful and able to make you successful if you make the right decision.
Remember, successful people are successful because they make better decisions and hence acted on the right things.
Unsuccessful people make the wrong decisions and acted on the wrong thing to get things that they don’t want in their lives.
It all starts with your decision. So what do you want to accomplish in your life? Decide for it right now and never let go of it.
Live a better life by making better decision.
Amazing!!! One of the best article. Thanks so much for sharing this with us. Sometime we misunderstand success. With that experience I have written article ” Success is not a destination. Its a journey”
Nice piece. I wanted to write on success and decision and this was quite helpful.
Thank you! 🙂
