Whether we like it or not, failure is an important part of life. It is necessary for personal growth and success in life overall. We may fail on a small or grander scale, once or many times, it doesn’t really matter. What matters is the process and what we have learned from our experiences.

No one likes to fail but it happens to everybody and in the end, we become better people. However, many of us avoid the prospect of failure like the plague.

Why? Because we are vulnerable and don’t want to face our fears or make mistakes.

By avoiding failure, we are in essence settling for less, we are not fulfilling our potential.

Failure teaches us about ourselves, how we cope with it, how we overcome it and how we can achieve greater things.

Failure Is Necessary

Failure is necessary and it can be a powerful a tool to help us reach our potential and great success.

Failure and defeat are life’s greatest teachers but most people don’t want to experience them due to internal insecurities and fear.

Instead, they choose to coast through life playing it safe by doing the same things day in and day out, making the same safe choices over and over again.

By never attempting anything new, they are avoiding possibly failing but they are also avoiding or rather missing out on succeeding.

Taking risks and surviving the battle and coming out on the other side arms you with valuable experiences that will serve you later in life.

Failure Develops Personal Growth

When we fail once or repeatedly, we grow and mature as human beings.

We reflect within ourselves to try to understand the processes, we gain perspective and develop insight.

Each time we fail, we learn something new about ourselves, which hopefully will help us grow and improve.

In doing so, we can pursue our own quests and embark on our own journey of self-discovery to reach our own personal goals and achieve our own potential.

We must challenge ourselves by taking risks in order to yield possible rewards. If it’s worth it, we will commit to it and yearn for it.

Failure Expands Your Comfort Zone

It’s easy to stay inside your strength zone and maintain the status quo but stepping away from that and going outside of your comfort zone is scary and requires dedication and determination.

Yes, you might fail or you might succeed. Life is a gamble.

You need courage and a strong will. If you fail you will learn about your strengths and weaknesses and you will utilize those lessons for the next challenge.

Be Positive

Keeping a positive attitude is crucial in order to be able to face any challenge you encounter.

By looking at the bright side of life, you will be able to see and learn from the lessons and then move forward.

Having a positive attitude is not always is easy, but it is a choice that we must do to withstand and overcome life trials and tribulations, including the outcomes of failure.

Learning from our Experiences

The first thing we learn from failure is an experience.

When we fail, we develop a deeper understanding of the situation that led us to fail and then we learn to appreciate what transpired.

We gain invaluable experience and insight. The second thing we gain is knowledge. Failure brings with it important life lessons.

From that, we acquire knowledge that can be used in the future to overcome obstacles that led us to fail but that can be jumped over to get onto the right path to success.

Don’t Quit

Like any long-distance race, endurance is a key factor.

Failing is part of it but not giving up is the most important thing to remember.

When we fail, most of us feel like throwing in the towel and giving up. That is the last thing you should do.

Quitting is not an option. It’s perfectly alright to fail, but not to quit.

You may fail again and again and you may feel like quitting many times but if you keep at it, when you do succeed, you will like a million bucks.

When we understand the value of failing, our attitude will also change and then the prospect of failing will not seem so dire.

Only then, we will stop dreading failure and rather welcome it as part of the journey of what needs to be done to succeed.

Visualize the End Result

In order to succeed, you must set specific and concrete goals. Then you must weigh your options and think whether the goal is worth failing for.

If it is indeed worth your efforts, then go all out in order to reach them. Visualize yourself at the finish line.

Sometimes, failure results from not setting concrete goals in the first place.

Track your progress along the way, stop to think and analyze each failure and redefine it as a step or a stumbling block, then adjust your expectations and if necessary alter your goals.

Final Thoughts

Failure isn’t the end of the world. It is part and parcel of a learning process that affords you great knowledge and experience.

You must learn to believe in yourself and have faith in your abilities. Be adamant and strive for your goals, visualize the end result and then go for it.

If you fail, you fail and you go on. Push forward. Learn from the lessons and recognize the importance of them.

Understand the impediments, modify your behavior, try again and again until you realize your own potential. Only then will you truly be happy.

As Joseph Campbell once said: “Follow your bliss.” The rest is secondary. And remember that quitting is not an option.

If you quit, you will not know what is to fail but you will also not know what it is to succeed.
